It’s a familiar headline. This is our new reality: extreme weather and year after year of record-breaking heat. And in our state of Oregon – drought and wildfire.
We understand how terrifying a fire can be! In the summer of 2023, we experienced an eye opening wildfire scare. We faced wildfire evacuation. During this time, we collaborated with neighbors and local firefighters. We worked to widen roads, create firebreaks, cut branches up to 20 feet, and clear dead underbrush. We also volunteered our tractors, excavators, water truck and vehicles as well as pond, fuel and water stores. The fire came within 1 mile of our property. We’ve made it our mission to help protect our community.

McClain’s Meadows provides permaculture landscape design and earthwork/heavy equipment services, and Fire Wise consulting. Our goal is to make our communities safer and more sustainable. No project is too small!

The best way to mitigate fire risk is to plan ahead and work with the land.
This means creating defensible spaces around homes, business and communities. Defensible space means building fire safe zones around these areas. We can enhance these spaces by avoiding monoculture, including native plants, and cultivating our water resources.
Anything an individual or family can do to enhance local safety and sustainability will help our community survive a fire. This can include anything from changing a front lawn into a garden or making your ranch more water wise. But it can be a daunting, overwhelming task.
McClain’s Meadows is here to help! We are experts in sustainable permaculture design, gardening and agriculture, forestry, conservation and creating fire safe spaces.

We encourage everyone to plan ahead. Most of our permaculture work is done in the Fall, water and Spring. During fire season, we contact with State and Federal agencies to protect communities in Oregon. When fire season is over, we take what we’ve learned back to our communities. We use permaculture practices to build fire wise spaces and enhance natural resources. We encourage everyone to plan ahead for drought and fire.
